Meydan Bridge

It felt kinda spooky to stand alone in the middle of an opulent and beautiful megastructure that emitted blue light along its undulating frame! I know you have no idea what I’m talking about. So take a while to look at the photo below before you continue to read the rest of the narrative.

Meydan Bridge

The Meydan Bridge is what it’s known as. Every year, members of the Royal family and their guests attend the Dubai World Cup at the Meydan Race Course by crossing this bridge. In order to elevate the prominence of this route and to create an architectural landmark in the city, it was decided to illuminate the bridge with a maintenance-free linear solution that would emit blue light and would easily integrate with the architecture and blend seamlessly with the undulations of the bridge. Now if that’s not royal style, what is?

However, half of the lights were busted by Tom Cruise while he drove over it during a car chase shoot for Mission Impossible — Ghost Protocol. Now don’t get me wrong—I’m a great fan of Tom Cruise, but I still can’t figure out how he had the heart to bust parts of such a beautiful structure. 🙂

Although Tom Cruise might have gone berserk while driving on the bridge, no one else can follow suit as the bridge is closed to traffic except for those race days. However, a big thanks goes to my brother Anshuman Ray and sister-in-law Vareen Ray for driving me to the edge of the bridge and waiting for me patiently as I walked up and literally went berserk shooting the bridge from hundreds of different angles.
