One afternoon in Varanasi, just after lunch, I hopped on to a boat that was on its way to the opposite bank of river Ganga. Samy, a young bright-eyed tourist from Australia, was also on the boat. She seemed friendly, smart, intelligent, and had lots of positive energy going for her.
A friend of the boatman (who seemed quite smitten by her charms) inquired if she could find him a bride from Australia. We all laughed at that and amidst all that bonhomie I asked Samy if I could take a photo of her. She gladly posed for me and even though the midday sun was blazing on her face she was sporting enough to take off her sunglasses.
The boatman’s friend looked at the photo and immediately quipped, “Mona Lisa.” It was a fun boat ride.
